Ashdown Forest is the largest open access space in the South East. It covers some 10 square miles of which nearly two thirds is Heathland - one of the rarest habitats in England. This may be at odds with what most people think when they hear the word Forest. But in fact the word Forest derives from the name of a Royal Hunting Park, which is what this area was from medieval times. The comparative lack of trees (although there are plenty of heavily wooded areas) has led to various significant plantings throughout the ages. For instance Elizabeth, Countess de la Warr, whose descendants owned the Forest until 1988 ordered clumps of Scots Pines to be planted in 1825, much to the chagrin of many local people who set about cutting them down. In 1973, The Friends of Ashdown Forest decided to commemorate the Year of the Tree by planting 'Friend's Clump' which is the largest of the areas of trees that you can see on the horizon in this picture. Intriguingly, the view of those who manage the Forest today is that it is best left to its own devices, and as a consequence there is now new planting, and in fact little intervention at all unless on the grounds of Health and Safety.
