The lamp was first lit in the New Beachy Head Light House in October 1902 as it formally replaced the earlier Belle Tout Light House which had been rendered less and less effective by ongoing erosion of the cliffs. Made from granite, the 43 metre high tower carried a lantern that could be seen from a distance of eight nautical miles. It was not always painted in its familiar red and white stripes, however. Originally it was just granite coloured, then a black stripe was added and finally the flamboyant colour scheme was introduced to make it a more prominent marker in daytime. The lamp was electrified in 1920 and in 1983 it was completely automated. This spelled the end for the generations of dedicated light house keepers who had braved many a lonely, stormy winter to keep mariners safe. The lighthouse did have some long-term guests in 2013 however, when those commissioned to re-paint the red and white stripes moved in for a fortnight so they could get on with the job without having to commute by boat every day. Their heroic efforts were matched by the enthusiasts who managed the fund-raising campaign for the £27,000 required to pay for the re-paint after Trinity House announced that they could no longer afford to do so.
