The magnificent gardens at Sheffield Park owe much to the hand of the master of English horticultural design, Capability Brown. When John Baker Holroyd first bought the house and gardens in 1769, he set about modernising them with the help of the most fashionable experts of the day - architect James Wyatt to remodel the house and Capability Brown to improve the gardens.
Brown created walks through the woodlands and clearings to give views down to the lakes and to the local village.Strategically placed Oaks in threes and fives broke up the landscape and new ponds were engineered to flow one into another as naturally as possible. Nearly 300 years on, and many significant gardeners later, his influence can still be felt in this most impressive, tranquil and atmospheric of spaces.
